United Nations Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Before White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip next week.

Sharaa was named transitional president following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.

Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions as the leader of the religious organization the HTS movement, once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and supportive states for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week follows American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

The two leaders convened initially this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the Middle East.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit is not his initial visit to the US this year. During September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
