The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, indicated that the municipality was ready for a dispute with President Donald Trump concerning his assertion that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup games from Gillette Stadium, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Boston.
Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to address criticism from the White House, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."
A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even the president, can change it.
Wu continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and comply or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging what Boston stands for." Wu finished by stressing her support for the Boston, saying, "Fully committed for Boston."
Earlier this week, Infantino was photographed alongside President Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also been to the White House and presented World Cup and Club World Cup trophies to Trump as presents.
Earlier, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police car being burned. Trump responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of the organization, who's great."
Trump continued, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Trump has previously suggested that he would take the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.
The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
